Beautiful views of the surrounding villages on the Köhlerweg. Unfortunately, some paths are very overgrown. The circular hiking trail around the Sosa reservoir is very pleasant to walk. My recommendation is to combine the Sosa reservoir circular trail with the Auerberg. Because here there are wide and well-signposted shady paths. Refreshments are available at the Auerberg and the prices are perfectly fine. This area is highly recommended for hiking with dogs.

If you follow the small path upwards from the bridge at the rest bench, you will have wonderful views and only hear the rushing of the stream.

The facility is located in a former quarry near the Sosa dam. Today it serves as a destination to experience this ancient craft up close. On-site, there is a charcoal maker's snack bar, designed in the style of a historic charcoal hut. A charcoal maker is an artificially piled heap of wood used to produce charcoal.

A circular hike with many attractive viewpoints through the idyllic, rocky Steinbach Valley in Johanngeorgenstadt, the town of the Schwibbogen (a candle arch). The Steinbach Valley lies north of the Johanngeorgenstadt districts of Steinbach and Neustadt. In terms of natural habitat, they lie in the eastern part of the Western Ore Mountains, whose eastern border is formed by the Schwarzwasser River. The Devil's Stones are located within the "Steinbach Valley Nature Trail." They can be reached via the "Steinbachweg" and "Schimmelgut" trails from Steinbach, the "Kanzelstein Circular Trail," or the "Graupnerweg" trail from Erlabrunn.

Yes, for a gentle and accessible option, consider the Sosa Reservoir – Sosa Dam loop from Sosa. This easy route is just under 6 km long and features minimal elevation gain, making it ideal for families with strollers or toddlers.
The trails around Stausee Sosa primarily wind through the beautiful Ore Mountain forests. You can expect well-maintained paths, but some routes, especially those venturing into valleys like the Steinbach Valley, may feature natural steps formed by stones and roots, offering a more adventurous feel. The dam wall itself provides flat, panoramic walking.
Many trails offer views of the picturesque Sosa Reservoir and its impressive dam. You might also encounter unique rock formations like the 'Devil's Stones' in the Steinbach Valley, or experience the 'Elbsandsteinfeeling' at the Höllengrundspitz, which can be reached via the adventurous Scramble Trail at Höllengrundspitze.
Absolutely! The Köhlerlehrpfad (Charcoal Burning Trail) around Sosa is a popular moderate circular route, about 12 km long, offering insights into the region's history. Another great option is the Sosa Charcoal Experience – Sosa Dam loop from Sosa, which is around 8 km and also moderate.
The region is beautiful year-round. Spring brings fresh greenery, summer offers pleasant forest shade, and autumn transforms the forests into a vibrant display of colors. Even in winter, with appropriate gear, the snow-covered landscapes can be magical for a family walk.
Generally, dogs are welcome on most hiking trails around Stausee Sosa. However, as the reservoir is a drinking water source, swimming for dogs (and humans) is not permitted. Always keep dogs on a leash, especially near wildlife and other hikers, and clean up after them.

For families with older children looking for a bit more challenge, the Devil's Stones – View of Sosa Dam loop from Sosa is a longer, more difficult route (around 18.7 km) that includes significant elevation changes and the chance to see the impressive Devil's Stones. The Scramble Trail at Höllengrundspitze also offers a fun, natural climbing experience.

From Sosa, many trails are within walking distance or a short local transfer away. It's advisable to check current bus schedules for the Erzgebirge region before your visit.
