Already around the turn of the century, the Erzgebirgszweigverein Johanngeorgenstadt laid a boardwalk in the moor and erected a viewing platform with a protective roof, which has since been renewed several times and whose location was moved several meters in the 1970s for better nature protection. It is a watershed, ridge and dwarf pine high moor, which is drained to the north by the Steinbach, to the west by the Große Bockau, to the south by the Buchschachtelgraben in the direction of Rolava, and to the east by the Lehmergrundbach. To the west lies the Großer Kranichsee, although its moor core is on the Czech side.

The Kleiner Kranichsee (Czech: Malé jeřábí jezero) is one of the most important raised bogs in the Ore Mountains. In Saxony, the moor has been under nature protection since 1939. Today it is the main component of the more extensive NSG Kleiner Kranichsee, Butterwegmoor and Henneberger Hang nature reserve. The Czech part of the moor was placed under state protection in 1962 on 6.02 hectares as a nature reserve. The raised bog is located at an altitude of 930 meters above sea level on a clearing in the high forest southwest of Johanngeorgenstadt. The border between Germany and the Czech Republic runs through the raised bog. (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kleiner_Kranichsee )

World's Largest Freestanding Candle Arch On December 15, 2012, the world's largest freestanding candle arch was inaugurated in Johanngeorgenstadt at the 20th Original Johanngeorgenstadt Candle Arch Festival. This giant is 25 meters wide and, including the candles, 14.5 meters high, and consists of 700 tons of reinforced concrete and 15 tons of stainless steel. The new attraction, as well as the giant pyramid, was donated by Johanngeorgenstadt entrepreneur Siegfried Ott. - Symbols in the candle arch: ° Wonder flower represents the legends of the Ore Mountains. ° Lacemaker represents one aspect of Ore Mountain folk art. ° Miners represent mining in Saxony. ° Upward-reaching flower signifies that folk art found fertile ground in the Ore Mountains. ° Crossed swords symbolize the Free State of Saxony. The horseshoe is a reminder that a mountain blacksmith invented the Schwibbogen (candle arch). The hammer and chisel are further symbols of mining. The light angel, woodcarver, and incense smoker represent the folk art of the Ore Mountains.
