From the 2,527-meter-high Varful Vistea Mare, Varful Moldoveanu can be reached in about 30 minutes. Romania's third-highest mountain isn't nearly as crowded, as everyone keeps moving on. The view, however, is equally impressive.

The Cabana Balea Lac, newly built in 2000, is beautifully situated on the lake. It's not a true mountain hut, but rather a modern inn offering comfortable accommodation and excellent food. The clientele is quite diverse, ranging from car tourists to hikers.

Since everything was full at first, we were kindly offered to sleep in the dining room. We ended up getting a bed in the dormitory for 150 lei. That was very nice, but not exactly cheap. In the evening, there was food available at the stated times, but the portions were really small (for 50 lei). We wanted to have lunch again before the descent at the stated lunchtime of 12-2 p.m., but when we asked, nothing was cooked. We then bought ourselves a Snickers and a Coke there and set off. So don't rely on the lunchtime meal times.

Simple, beautifully situated stone hut with large dormitories – thin wool blankets and pillows provided, sleeping bag recommended. Good drinking water from a mountain spring, very simple food (vegetarian options, however, only available upon reservation the night before!). There are toilets and sinks with cold water for washing. In summer, the dining room and dormitories are not heated in the evenings and at night. Breakfast is served from 7 a.m., allowing for an early start to Moldoveanu. The hut has comparatively high prices, which is understandable given its high and remote location. Reservations are a good idea in summer.

Very nice place to camp, just a bit busy and a lot of tourism

Here it is much quieter, a bit away from the hustle and bustle of Lacul Balea

Bâlea Lac is an amazing lake to visit. Just by the most famous road in Romania, Transfăgăråșan. Stop by at a restaurant here with a view towards the lake if you feel hungry. Awesome landscape and road to the lake.

There are currently over 10 challenging mountaineering routes documented on komoot for the Sibiu region. These routes are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 5.0 stars, and have been explored by nearly 90 mountaineers.
The best time for mountaineering in Sibiu is generally from late spring to early autumn (May to October), when trails are clear of snow and weather conditions are more stable. High-altitude areas in the Făgăraş Mountains, like those accessed via the Transfăgărăşan road, are typically accessible during this period. Winter ascents are possible but require advanced experience and specialized gear due to challenging conditions.
While many routes in the Făgăraş Mountains are quite challenging, the Cindrel Mountains, located almost entirely within Sibiu County, offer a softer landscape with extensive forests and alpine pastures. These are more suitable for less strenuous hikes and can be ideal for families seeking a tranquil experience. You might consider exploring areas around Păltiniş or villages like Râu Sadului, Răşinari, and Cisnădioara for accessible trails.
Many trails in the Sibiu mountains, particularly in the Cindrel and Lotru ranges with their extensive forests and alpine meadows, are generally dog-friendly. However, always ensure your dog is well-behaved, on a leash where required, and that you carry enough water for both of you. In higher, more rugged terrain like parts of the Făgăraş Mountains, the rocky paths can be challenging for paws, so assess your dog's fitness and the route's difficulty carefully.
Yes, there are several excellent circular routes available. For a challenging high-altitude experience, consider the Vârful Viștea Mare – Moldoveanu Peak Summit loop from No tax parking “Stana lui Burnei ”, which leads to the highest peak in the Făgăraş Mountains. Another option is the Călțun – Lăițel loop from Transfăgărășan, traversing high alpine terrain.
The Sibiu mountains are home to diverse wildlife. You might spot various bird species, deer, and even larger mammals like brown bears and lynx, especially in the wilder and less accessible Lotru Mountains or forested areas of the Cindrel. Always maintain a safe distance, avoid disturbing animals, and be aware of your surroundings, particularly when hiking in remote areas.
Absolutely! The Făgăraş Mountains are renowned for their refreshing glacial lakes and cool waterfalls. The iconic Bâlea Lake is a prominent feature, and you can explore its surroundings on routes like the Bâlea Lake – Vaiuga loop from Transfăgărășan or the Bâlea Lake – Paltinu Saddle loop from Transfăgărășan. These areas offer stunning views of the high-altitude landscape and natural water features.
Beyond the natural beauty, several highlights are close to the mountaineering areas. Bâlea Lake itself is a major attraction, accessible via the scenic Transfăgărăşan road. For those interested in mountain huts, you can find places like Cabana Podragu, which also serves as a starting point for routes like the Cabana Podragu – Moldoveanu Peak Summit loop from Podragu. The nearby city of Sibiu also offers historical sites like Piata Mare (The Big Square) and Bridge of Lies - Podul Minciunilor.
Winter mountaineering in Sibiu, particularly in the Făgăraş Mountains, offers unique challenges for experienced climbers. The region research mentions that winter ascents, such as the 3-day climb on Lespezi, attract advanced mountaineers. Routes like the Lespezi loop from Hotelul Piscu Negru can be undertaken in winter with proper preparation, equipment, and expertise. Always check weather and avalanche conditions before attempting winter ascents.
The Sibiu region is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 5.0 stars. Reviewers often praise the diverse and challenging Carpathian mountain ranges, from the rocky peaks and glacial lakes of the Făgăraş to the extensive forests and alpine pastures of the Cindrel. The expansive views, rich alpine vegetation, and the sense of wilderness are frequently highlighted as key attractions.
Access to some trailheads in the Sibiu mountains can be achieved via public transport to nearby villages. For instance, trails in the Cindrel Mountains can be accessed from villages like Râu Sadului, Răşinari, and Cisnădioara, which may have local bus connections from Sibiu. However, for high-altitude routes, especially those starting from the Transfăgărăşan road, private transport or organized tours are often more practical due to limited public transport options to remote mountain passes.
Many popular trailheads, especially those along the Transfăgărăşan road, offer designated parking areas. For example, the Vârful Viștea Mare – Moldoveanu Peak Summit loop starts from a parking area near “Stana lui Burnei”. Similarly, routes around Bâlea Lake and other accessible points on the Transfăgărăşan often have parking facilities. For routes in the Cindrel or Lotru mountains, parking might be available in or near the starting villages.
While the Făgăraş Mountains are well-known, the Lotru Mountains are generally wilder and less accessible, offering stunning views and rich biodiversity away from the crowds. Exploring trails in the Lotru range, perhaps starting from idyllic areas like Râu Sadului village towards peaks like Prejba, could offer a more secluded and 'hidden gem' experience compared to the more frequented Făgăraş routes. These areas are characterized by wide alpine meadows covering their ridges.
