Green Valley Falls Loop – Cuyamaca Rancho State Park

Embark on the easy Green Valley Falls Loop, a 4.0-mile (6.4 km) hike in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park that takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes to complete, with an elevation gain of 484 feet (148 metres). The trail guides you through varied landscapes of oak woodlands, open meadows, and areas dotted with pines, following the Sweetwater River as it flows over granitic boulders. You will encounter a series of cascading falls and pools, with the path winding along fire roads and the scenic Sweetwater Trail, offering views of large oaks and native plants, including wildflowers like Indian paintbrush in season. Keep an eye out for diverse bird species such as northern flickers and Steller's jays at designated identification stations along the way.

To make the most of your visit, plan an early-morning start, especially if you aim to secure one of the limited day-use parking spots near the falls. There is a $10 parking fee required to access Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. Be aware that the Green Valley Falls can be seasonal; while they are a popular spot for wading and sunning in the cold water during warmer months, the water levels may be low or dry in late summer.

The Green Valley Falls are the highlight of this route, where the Sweetwater River tumbles over granite, with the longest drop reaching about 15 feet. These falls create several pools of varying depths, perfect for cooling off on a warm day. Situated at an elevation of 4,000 feet, this loop is part of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, which boasts over 100 miles of trails for hikers, bikers, and equestrians, making it a notable destination for outdoor enthusiasts in the region.
