This was once a very narrow and dangerous roadbed with a steep drop directly below you. Now it has become a popular area for official death markers - and unofficial death markers - formal remembrances to the people that have passed.
The small town seen at the valley floor is the Butterfield Mobile Home and RV community.

The Laguna Mountain Ridge via the PCT offers a diverse and rewarding hiking experience, showcasing the dramatic eastern escarpment of the Laguna Mountains. You'll traverse varied terrain from chaparral to pine forests, with nearly continuous, expansive views over the Anza-Borrego Desert. On clear days, you might even spot the Salton Sea from viewpoints like Storm Canyon Overlook, making this a visually rich and engaging route.

This difficult 18.2-mile (29.4 km) hike involves 1353 feet (412 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes around 8 hours and 8 minutes. Access is convenient via the Sunrise Scenic Byway, which runs parallel to the trail. Be aware that strong winds can add to the challenge, and snow is possible in winter and early spring at these higher elevations, so check conditions before you go.

What makes this section of the PCT truly notable are the stunning, high-elevation desert views, often described as 'Kodachrome gold and pink' at sunrise. It's considered one of the most accessible and rewarding parts of the Pacific Crest Trail in Southern California, offering a taste of long-distance hiking with the convenience of multiple entry points. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including hawks and rabbits, as you explore this unique landscape.

Embark on the Sunrise Trailhead to Pioneer Mail Trail, a moderate hike spanning 7.3 miles (11.8 km) with an elevation gain of 910 feet (277 metres). This route offers a unique blend of mountain and desert scenery, taking you along a segment of the Pacific Crest Trail. You will discover panoramic views, including a dramatic 3,000-foot drop into the Anza Borrego Desert State Park, making for a rewarding experience that typically takes around 3 hours and 19 minutes to complete.

When planning your visit, remember that this is a one-way journey, and attempting a round trip will significantly increase both the distance and elevation. Summer heat and limited shade can make midday hiking challenging, so it is best to start early or later in the day to avoid the peak temperatures. Always carry plenty of water and be prepared for varying conditions along the route.

This trail is situated within the vast Cleveland National Forest, offering a chance to see wildflowers, especially in areas that have recovered from past fires. The meeting point of mountain and desert ecosystems creates a diverse natural environment. Kwaaymii Point, a notable landmark on the trail, is also recognized as an excellent spot for stargazing, adding another unique dimension to your adventure.

Embark on an easy hike along the Kwaaymii Point via Pacific Crest Trail, a 1.6-mile (2.6 km) route that offers expansive views of the Anza-Borrego Desert. You will gain 160 feet (49 metres) in elevation, making this a quick adventure that takes about 44 minutes to complete. As you walk, you will notice the low-growing chaparral vegetation, including yerba santa and manzanita, which adds to the unique desert-mountain scenery.

To plan your visit, start your hike from the Pioneer Mail Picnic Site, which provides convenient access. Be prepared for potentially cold and windy conditions, as strong gusts are common at this nearly 6,000-foot elevation. Always check the weather forecast before you head out to ensure a comfortable and safe experience on the trail.

This section of the Pacific Crest Trail follows a wide, unpaved path that was once part of the historic Sunrise Highway. Kwaaymii Point itself is a key highlight, offering spectacular panoramic vistas where you can often spot Mount San Jacinto to the north on clear days. The route features a dramatic drop to the desert floor below, showcasing Cottonwood Canyon and the vast desert landscape.
