Radley Little Wood is home to a grove of ash trees of national special interest. The large ancient ash trees have formed a large intricate “wood wide web” of soil fungi that connects them in an intimate network that allows the sharing of an enormous amount of information and goods.

You can find more information at Woodland Trust's Ancient Tree Inventory about these ancient ash trees, e.g. the largest of ash tree is a coppice measuring 6.23m at a height of 0.10m: tiny.cc/2ad5tz

The Ash tree plays a central role in Norse mythology, where the axis mundi, Yggdrasil, is a vast, evergreen ash tree watered by three magical springs, sustaining the nine worlds of the cosmos in its roots and branches.

Radley Little Wood’s canopy is dominated by oak and ash, of which at least ten are over 200 years old and characterised by The Woodland Trust as Trees of Special National Interest.

See this video for a year in the life of an Ash tree.
