July 15, 2026, Old railroad

It's an interesting experience walking the old railroad between Loon Lake and Summit Lake. The stretch across the western end of Summit Lake is particularly scenic. The original railway ties can be uneven, rotten or have gaps and some timbers have weathered considerably after decades without maintenance. It's best not to walk out onto the trestles unless you're comfortable assessing the conditions yourself. Generally not suitable for dogs.

July 15, 2026, Loon Lake

Nestled within a spurce forest, Loon Lake is easily accessible from Port Alberni and attracts families and anglers. A walk along the old railway line to nearby Summit Lake is an interesting experience, while it's possible to do a fine loop of both lakes too.

The old railroad at Summit Lake provides views towards Arrowsmith Mountain on a clear day. The mountain is the highest on Vancouver Island east of Port Alberni and its jagged profile is a fine sight.

Incinerator Rock is a striking rock formation on Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. The beach is popular with surfers. There is paid parking for cars and small RVs – included in the entrance ticket to Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. During World War II, the Royal Canadian Air Force maintained a waste incinerator next to this rock to burn waste from the Tofino Air Force Base. https://www.knowbc.com/limited/Books/The-Encyclopedia-of-Raincoast-Place-Names/I/Incinerator-Rock We are at the beach early in the morning on May 18, 2025. The temperature is pleasant under blue skies and light clouds. At low tide, we take the opportunity to walk far out on the beach and observe the numerous surfers – a magnificent setting.
