Location: It is situated about 2.5 miles (4 km) west of West Bay, between the villages of Eype and Seatown. Height: Its elevation is about 157 metres (515 ft) high, offering stunning panoramic views of the coastline, including West Bay to the east and the towering Golden Cap to the west. History: Its name comes from its use as one of a chain of beacon sites along the south coast of England, historically used to light fires to provide an early warning of invasion, most famously against the Spanish Armada in 1588.

John Edward Varley was a Dorset resident who lived at and was associated with The Old Coastguards, Abbotsbury, Weymouth, Dorset, DT3 4LB. He served as a director for companies related to the area, including OLD COASTGUARDS MANAGEMENT CO. LTD., with his occupation listed as property management and later retired. This is a memorial bench to him.

Use the JustPark app to park at West Bexington car park, where you’ll be treated to immediate views of Chesil Beach and the open sea. Facing the water: • Turn left for a walk towards Abbotsbury – the going is tough at first due to deep shingle, but it becomes noticeably easier after about 700 metres. • Turn right to head towards Hive Beach – a beautiful but more challenging start, with easier walking after roughly 2 km. The path is slow and energy-draining early on due to the small stones underfoot, but the effort pays off with incredible scenery and a real sense of wild, open space. Also known as the summer route. Take notice of that bit....SUMMER. The wetter the weather the more waterlogged and boggy the route becomes. This is the second time attempting this bit in the winter. We made the right decision and came off as soon as we could, and back on to the winter route along the shingle beach.
