The Extratour Wasserkuppe leads over 10.6 kilometers through impressive landscapes and to important places in the history of the Rhön. The starting point is the tourist information on the Wasserkuppe. From there, the path initially runs across the grounds of the former barracks and continues to the Groenhoff-Haus. After a short ascent, the Abtsrodaer Kuppe is reached – a quiet viewpoint with a wide view over the Rhön ridges. This is followed by the ascent to the high plateau of the Wasserkuppe, the highest point in the Rhön at 950 meters. There, the Fliegerdenkmal (aviators' monument) as a place of remembrance invites you to linger. Over the ridge of the Pferdskopf, it continues down to the Guckaisee, one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in the region. The return route leads over paved paths past flower-rich mountain meadows, the source of the Fulda river, and the Zuckerfeld ski area back to the starting point.
