Lake of the Mistérios Negros

Highlight (Segment) • Lake

Very technical trail, suitable for experienced runners with good shoes. The landscape is wonderful, but don't let the distance fool you: the pace here is quite slow due to the numerous obstacles. Pay extra attention in case of adverse weather conditions.

Negro Lagoon

Highlight • Lake

Circular walk "Misterio Negro". Very nice hiking trail on Terceira. Solid (waterproof) shoes are recommended! Sure-footedness in wet weather absolutely necessary! No "Turnschuhweg" even if others see it that way ...

Sulphur Furnaces

Highlight • Volcano

Keep on the path and breath in the sulphurous gases emanating from the ground in wisps! This whole area is hot! A good reminder that this entire island exists in the middle of the Atlantic precisely because of volcanic activity. Read the interesting facts on the display boards around this route.

Christmas Cave

Highlight • Cave

For some reason, I imagined the whole thing to be more spectacular.
In any case, the different formations were certainly very interesting, and there are several signs explaining the formations.
It took me about 30 minutes in total, including taking photos, etc., during which you were free to move around the path in the cave.

Biscoitos Natural Swimming Pools

Highlight • Natural Monument

I find it impressive how almost every small village by the sea in the Azores has its own "swimming pool". Either the natural pools are mainly used here, or actually a real swimming pool, sometimes only a simplified access to the sea. There are fewer beaches in the Azores. There is usually a restaurant or at least a food truck in these places.

The Christmas Cave is a lava tunnel, and along the (rather short) circular trail, information panels explain its geological origins. Due to the high humidity, water constantly drips from the ceiling, and you have to bend down for a few short sections. Please note that even in summer, it's only open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and the entrance fee is currently €9 (2025).

The lake's water level depends heavily on the season and the amount of rainfall over the past few days. In summer, the water level is usually low. Nevertheless, it's worth a look, especially since it's located directly next to the parking lot.

It is certainly a very nice walk, although there are certainly parts that require some experience. You can easily break a leg on some parts. Definitely do not start with sneakers on. We are reasonably trained walkers and it took us about 2 1/2 hours. Clambering and climbing experience is useful if you have this.

If you catch a nice day and it is not very busy, the short hike is an impressive experience - volcanism you can touch and smell. We were almost alone there and thought it was fantastic. It shouldn't rain though

We took 1:45 with a 9 year old to hike this trail. The ratings are accurate and half of the trail going up is technical and requires climbing. When raining we would recommend hiking poles. It’s very beautiful and fun.
