Reißinsel is a designated nature reserve and is closed every year from March through June to allow the birds living there to raise their young undisturbed. The northern part of Reißinsel is protected as a "bannwald" (protected forest). This area is not used for forestry purposes in any way. To the south lies a "Schonwald" (conserved forest), where forestry management is specifically geared towards protecting the forest.
