There are three ways to get up; depending on the route to Spirzen or St.Märgen. Above the Sprizenstraße (K4907), named after the highlight, but which according to the photos is the Steigweg, you end up at the top of Spirzen near the Schweighöfen. Both, the Spirzenstraße as well as the Steigweg, thus lead to Spirzen, with the significantly steeper Steigweg compared to the Spirzenstraße. The third possibility to get up is the Wagensteigstraße, located on the L128, a flatter route through the Wagensteigtal up to the village of St. Märgen, which is about 900 m high. In the past, the Steigweg belonged to the independent municipality of Steig – today it belongs to Wagensteig.

A well-developed, well-surfaced bike path along the Dreisam River. Without traffic lights, you can make good progress here. The closer you get to Freiburg, the busier it gets.

Like with the Feldberg, there probably isn't a particularly nice climb. Lots of traffic, no shade. If you're desperate to climb Schauinsland, you should take the route shown in this highlight. Further up, once you leave the main road, it gets quieter, but as has already been mentioned here: steeper.

The gravel is surprisingly rough and sharp-edged, but modern tires can handle it. The view is worth it.

The road will be closed for eight months starting August 11, 2025. From Göschweiler, you can still reach Wutachmühle, but the southern approach is closed.
