Los Cahorros de Monachil Loop

The charming circuit of Los Cahorros in Monachil took us past steep rock faces, waterfalls and over five suspension bridges to cross the gorge. At some points in the gorge we could only push our way past the rock walls with difficulty. At the narrowest point, however, only crawling helped 😅

Spectacular route that allows us to cross the Monachil river through the Cahorros ravine, in a circular itinerary of great beauty and simplicity that starts and returns to the same town It is a simple route that can be covered in a short time. The route begins in the urban area of Monachil. Crossing the river over a bridge, take a road to the right, first paved, which ascends between farms of cherry trees and other fruit trees, crosses in front of the rural hotel La Almunia del Valle and reaches the Cortijo de la Umbría. Here the trail offers magnificent views of the city of Granada and neighboring towns and, ahead, the steep valley of the Monachil River. The path descends to the river and allows you to enjoy the spectacular vertical pits, the narrow stone steps and the ecological richness of the environment. Continue through the gorge, on the left bank of the river. The narrowness of the road forces you to crouch or crawl on all fours in some sections. A water pipe crosses the Túnel de las Palomas, which joins the two walls of the gorge, forming a natural cave with several climbing routes. The long suspension bridge of Los Cahorros, 63 meters long, is probably, together with the places of Cumbres Verdes and La Silla del Moro, one of the images most associated with the traditional excursions of the people of Granada. It was installed for the first time more than a hundred years ago and has been reformed to gain security

It's supposed to be a hot day again and we haven't been to the Sierra Nevada yet. It was the mountains that we were looking forward to. But at 35 degrees I didn't feel like scrambling between hot rocks. Mario found this refreshing river hike today, which still led us into the mountains. The circular route starts in the town of Monachil, just before Granada. We left our car on the side of the road and walked along the river towards the mountains. On the way we saw that there is a parking lot for hikers right at the beginning of the trail. Because we'll take it next time :) But we were looking forward to the route along the water, there were also small pools along the way where you could swim. We didn't need to cool off yet, the lush vegetation provided fresh air. Later we passed several suspension bridges, the last one in particular was incredibly long and caused a certain tingling in the stomach. Now we were in the middle of the gorge, where climbers stood at 5 meter intervals to practice climbing the smooth walls. We, on the other hand, practiced balancing. The narrow concrete path along the river was occasionally overlooked by rock faces. Sometimes we crawled under it, once we climbed into the river and were able to shimmy along the handles. We met two men who ran straight into the river. We already had that :) After the gorge, the path ran in the "open" landscape. Since it was very hot, we thought about the further route while having a picnic. We had enough water with us and therefore decided to take the way back up the mountain. We were rewarded with magnificent views. I was enthusiastic about the vegetation ... in spring it must be fantastic ... and not so hot :)

Beautiful walk along a fast flowing river. After 2.5KM, after the suspension bridge at the waterfall, comes the challenging part. Narrow path along the river where you sometimes have to crawl to get under the rocks. Challenging but doable if you are not afraid of very narrow sections along the rock above the river. Wear good shoes with grip!

What a great tour!! So beautiful 😍. I can only recommend the trail to anyone who comes to the area. The route leads through the Monachil Gorge in an exciting and varied way, always along the river. Sometimes you go on all fours, sometimes you have to climb, sometimes you shimmy along the rock or cross one of the long suspension bridges. The way back then offers super nice views of the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. How good that komoot exists! We have already discovered so many wonderful places and paths with this app. And this tour today is one of our most beautiful hikes 👍😍😊
