The Los Cahorros de Monachil Loop invites you on an unforgettable adventure through a limestone gorge, where the Monachil River has carved a fairytale landscape. You'll find yourself crossing suspension bridges, navigating narrow passages, and admiring waterfalls, all within a lush setting of olive trees and wild herbs. This is a moderate 5.0-mile (8.0 km) hike with 824 feet (251 meters) of elevation gain, taking approximately 2 hours and 24 minutes, perfect for those seeking an interactive and fun experience.
To plan your visit, keep in mind that the trail is very popular due to its proximity to Granada. Some sections along the river can be slippery after rain, and the uphill portion can be hot in summer, so bring plenty of water and appropriate footwear. Spring and autumn are the best times to enjoy the route, whether for the wildflowers or the vibrant foliage colors.
What truly sets this route apart are its numerous suspension bridges, with one being among the longest in Spain, adding an exciting element to the hike. Additionally, the Los Cahorros gorge offers the chance to explore passages under rocks and cool off in the river's pools, making this one of the most unique routes near the Sierra Nevada.
