Beeley Woods Cycle Path (Route 627)

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

An easy and traffic-free route from Oughtibridge to Hillsborough that provides a welcome alternative to dodging the tram tracks. The route cuts through Beeley Woods alongside the river, so it's flat and very well surfaced. Great for all kinds of bikes and for young children, too. Can get busy at weekends.

Plank Gate, Trans Pennine Trail

A little bit of wilderness close to the city!

This section of the Trans Pennine Trail is a wide, groomed, gravel path through the woodland linking Wortley to Oughtibridge. It's undulating but there aren't any very steep climbs.

It's less than 6 miles (10 km) out of Sheffield city centre but it feels like you could be in the middle of nowhere, even though the busy A6102 runs just to the west of it.

Wortley Hall Grounds Trail

This lovely, wide gravel track through the old grounds of Wortley Hall is part of the Trans Pennine Trail and Timberland Trail. It's one of the best bits of gravel in Barnsley.

Black Lane Gravel Track (Tankersley Parish)

Amazing gravel track leading from Hoyland towards Harley/Wentworth.
Part of this is part of the TPT, but it then turns off. If you are approaching it from Wentworth, heading west, don't be put off by the private road sign. That is utter nonsense. I would recommend doing this east bound, then you get the sweet downhill.

Bridleway from Scholes to Thorpe Hesley

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Rotherham's very own answer to Paris-Roubaix, this little stretch of roughly-cobbled bridleway is pretty tough on the forearms if you've not got front suspension. The cobbles ease off around the halfway mark into a smoother dirt track.

Keppel's Column

Highlight • Monument

Keppel's Column is a 35 metre, Grade II-listed tower near Scholes, between Wentworth and Kimberworth.
It was built in the late-18th century to commemorate the acquittal of the court-martialled Admiral Augustus Keppel and is one of a number of follies located close to Wentworth Woodhouse.
It's not open to the public any more but the bridleway and footpaths run right to its base.
