Linthorst Homanpolder Monument

Highlight • Monument

There are now two monuments on the dike in Westernieland. One for the reclamation of the Linthorst Homanpolder. “Dei nait wil diek'n mout wiek'n,” it says. The second monument is in memory of fourteen people, including thirteen from the Ranum bus disaster. In the misty morning of October 16, 1940, a bus full of workers fell under the train. The fourteenth worker was killed when he came under the locomotive that was transporting the dug up soil. According to the Nieuwsblad van het Noord, thousands of interested parties had arrived to make the funeral an impressive ceremony. The graves of twelve victims can still be found at the Zuidergraafplaats in Groningen. Driver Havers was buried in his hometown of Zwolle.

De Liefde Windmill, Uithuizen

Highlight • Monument

As early as 1499 there is talk of wind in Uithuizen. In the period from 1536 to 1566 the mill in Uithuizen is mentioned six times and in 1621 'de Mollenwijrde in Uthusen' is mentioned. There is then a post mill where wheat and rye are ground. This mill had different owners at that time and in 1808 it was Machiel Cornelis Mulder. In 1866 H. Mulder was the owner and in 1866 he tore down the stand mill and replaced it with a new octagonal upper wheel with scaffolding, the current windmill De Liefde.

Cycle path near Uithuizen

Highlight • Cycleway

The very well-developed cycle path network is partly due to the Dollard bike path running here. Interesting section shortly before Uithuizen.

Rensumaborg

Highlight • Castle

The Rensumaborg, based on a 16th-century stone house, was first mentioned in 1623. Willem Fockes rented the deposit at that time. What the stone house looked like in the 16th century is not known, nor is it known to what the name of the deposit is. From the mid-19th century, the house was rented out, so that it served as a horticultural school for a while. Today the borg is inhabited: groningerborgen.nl/borg/?cg%5Boid%5D=1004&cHash=6be4b599239312d000c4373634ab6e9e
