Poem by JAN WOLKERS, Oegstgeest 1925 - Den Burg 2007

Original (Dutch)
THE MEMORY
It was so long ago
That it should have been forgotten
It's so fresh
Like a footstep in the grass,
Like smoke billowing from an open window,
Dew dripping along crop
Through earth and dust,
A thought that was no longer there.
================================================== =======
In English from Muurgedichten.nl

THE MEMORY
It was so long ago
that it should have been forgotten,
It's so fresh
Like a footstep in the grass,
Like smoke lifted through an open window,
Dew dripping along crop,
through earth and dust,
A thought that no longer was.

Former town hall of Oegstgeest (1900-1999)

Highlight • Historical Site

The second town hall of Oegstgeest.
The building was built in 1899 and inaugurated in 1900. A striking feature is the niche with the municipal coat of arms of Oegstgeest, a red anchor cross on a golden field, which is held by a lion.
The statue with coat of arms was already on the original design from 1899, but was only placed in November 1927.

The turret also had to do without a clockwork for a long time. Only at the end of 1925 did the city council decide to have the clock installed in honor of the 25th anniversary of the city hall.
In June 2020, after years of standstill, the clock was restored to working condition.

In 1940 the German occupier requisitioned the town hall to establish the “Ortskommandantur” (the local headquarters of the Wehrmacht). The municipality of Oegstgeest will then be without a town hall, but can move into the vacant house Wilhelminapark 15 at that time.

After the Oegstgeest officials moved to their new location in 1999, the town hall was sold to an architectural and engineering firm from Oegstgeest.
Today it is rented out as office space and several companies are located in the building.

At CORPUS, you can undertake a "journey through the human being", for example in the 5D Heart Theater, where you embark on a dizzying journey as a red blood cell. In the brain show you can discover the spectacular functioning of the human brain. How do the intestines react to a cheese sandwich? What happens when you sneeze? At what point on the tongue do you taste sugar and which salt? Answers to these and thousands of other questions you get here as well.
