Rohnberg summit (1,257 m)

Highlight • Summit

Actually not far from the hustle and bustle at the Schliersbergalm. Despite this, not many people wander up here. The view is limited. Below the summit there is still some view of the lake. At the summit itself you only look south towards Brecherspitz and co. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful place, decorated with a bench and summit cross.

Karl Haider Memorial on Hochburg

Highlight • Monument

Magnificent viewpoint.
was a Bavarian landscape and portrait painter who spent the last years of his life in Schliersee and found his final resting place there. His most famous works include the portraits “Elise Greinwald” and “Schlierseerin” as well as the painting entitled “Flower Meadow”.

Karl Michael Haider was born on February 6, 1846 as the son of a forester in Anzing. He spent a few years of his school time at an arts high school in Munich. His first career choice was to be a singer, but he soon realized his true calling: Karl Haider wanted to be a painter. He learned the basics of art in a private painting school and later switched to the Munich Art Academy.
At the age of 29, the young artist traveled to Florence, where he spent a year copying “old masters” by making woodcuts of their works. Back in Munich in 1876, he settled there as a freelance painter. But artistic success was a long time coming. All museums and galleries rejected his pictures, and only a few private commissions ensured a meager living. In 1882 his wife Katharina died. Since Haider could not raise the money for the funeral, the Munich painter Franz von Lenbach gave him a helping hand. Haider - who was now heavily in debt - also received great support from his colleagues and friends from Wilhelm Leibl's circle of artists.

In 1890 Karl Haider married his second wife Ernestine Schwarz. But this connection also turned out to be extremely unfortunate. The only bright spot was their son Ernst Haider, later a painter just as well-known as Hubert Haider, Karl Haider's son from his first marriage.
In 1874 the state granted the impoverished artist a small pension, and two years later Haider settled in Schliersee. It was only at this time that the long-awaited success slowly came about.
