The original capital of the Naxi kingdom, ten kilometres north of Lijiang at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Quieter and more rural than Lijiang Old Town: one cobbled street, earthen houses, Dongba pictographs painted on the walls. Don’t miss the Baisha Murals in Dabaoji Palace — fourteenth to sixteenth century, mixing Tibetan Buddhist, Taoist and Chinese Buddhist imagery. Easy by bus or bike from Lijiang; go in the morning for mountain views.
