Red Hugh O’Donnell (1572–1602) was head of the O’Donnell clan of Tyrconnell. Together with Hugh O’Neill, he led the revolt against the English troops, known as the Nine Years’ War. His name lives on in Donegal, where the castle and this statue mark his legacy.
