Life and water belong together. In the water of the Sarsven swam all kinds of fish that the hunters from the Middle Stone Age (8000 BC) were fond of. They hollowed out sturdy tree trunks into canoes with which they went out on the water. It was during this period that the marshiness of the fens increased. Over many centuries the fens filled up with peat that was extracted from the Middle Ages onwards. The chunks of peat dried into peat that could burn excellently. Dried peat plants from prehistory provided heat in a seventeenth-century fire.
