The Bird Mountain Loop in Frozen Head State Park offers a rewarding and difficult jogging experience, winding through varied terrain that includes pocket meadows, wide open meadows, and forested ridges. You'll encounter scenic viewpoints along the way, and if you visit in autumn, the huckleberry leaves transform into a vibrant display of red and yellow. This 7.1-mile (11.5 km) route features a substantial 1749 feet (533 metres) of elevation gain, making it a solid challenge for experienced runners.
Located within Frozen Head State Park, the trailhead is generally easy to access, though specific parking details are best confirmed locally. Given the trail's difficulty and elevation, it's wise to plan your jog for dry conditions. While the estimated duration is around 1 hour and 31 minutes for jogging, allow extra time to truly appreciate the diverse landscapes and scenic overlooks.
This loop integrates sections of the Cumberland Trail, W Lookout Tower Trail, and the Bird Mountain Trail, showcasing the park's varied ecosystems. It's a prime example of the challenging and beautiful trails available in Tennessee, perfect for those looking to push their limits and enjoy the natural beauty of the region. The changing colors of the huckleberry bushes in fall are a particular highlight.

The South Old Mac and West Lookout Tower Loop offers a truly challenging jogging experience through the varied terrain of Frozen Head State Park. You'll navigate packed dirt, roots, and rocks as you climb through ridges, valleys, and hollows, with the highlight being the panoramic views from the historic Frozen Head Lookout Tower. This difficult 10.0-mile (16.0 km) route includes a substantial 2156 feet (657 metres) of elevation gain, making it a serious workout that takes around 2 hours and 8 minutes to complete.
To tackle this demanding route, head to the Old Mac Trailhead where parking is available. The best time to visit is during spring for wildflowers or autumn for vibrant fall foliage and comfortable temperatures, which also offer the clearest views from the tower. Dogs are permitted on the trail if kept on a leash, so you can bring your furry friend along for the adventure.
This loop is known for its particularly strenuous South Old Mac Trail segment, which involves a significant 1800-foot climb over 2.5 miles on rugged singletrack. Beyond the physical challenge, the Frozen Head Lookout Tower itself is a notable landmark, sometimes open for climbing, and the route also passes by Panther Gap and the Tub Spring Campsite, which has picnic tables.
