    Hiking

Here you get a wonderful view from the western side of Ohiopyle Falls. There are a few different falls in the state park, but this is probably the most popular. The area brings in white rafters and kayakers, so you may be lucky enough to time your visit with some launching themselves into the water.

The Ferncliff Trail offers a delightful and accessible loop around the unique Ferncliff Peninsula in Ohiopyle State Park. As you walk, you'll experience a rich tapestry of mature hardwood forests, lush ferns, and wildflowers, all thriving in the river-created microclimate. The path frequently opens up to provide stunning views of the Youghiogheny River, including close-up perspectives of the impressive Ohiopyle Falls.

This easy 2.2-mile (3.6 km) hike involves a gentle 109 feet (33 metres) of elevation gain and can be completed in about 56 minutes. It's a fantastic option for hikers of all levels, including families, and can be enjoyed year-round. Be prepared for potentially muddy and slippery sections on the lower trail after rain or during spring thaws, as some areas feature exposed bedrock.

What makes this trail truly special is its location within a designated State Park Natural Area and National Natural Landmark. The Ferncliff Peninsula is an ecological wonder, boasting diverse flora and geological features like fossil impressions in the exposed sandstone ledges. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including deer, hawks, and various songbirds, adding to the trail's natural appeal.
