Screw Auger Falls is a popular waterfall just off the side of the highway in Grafton Notch State Park. The trail to the viewing area is short.

The park features a few waterfalls and viewpoints just off the side of Bear River Road. The road is paved and has pretty consistent traffic on it, but you can easily run on the wide shoulder and access these short trails off the side of the road. There is a parking here for Screw Auger Falls where you can leave your car while you run.

Embark on the Step Falls Trail and Bear River Road Loop for a refreshing jogging experience through Grafton Notch State Park. This moderate route covers 4.5 miles (7.3 km) and involves a manageable elevation gain of 375 feet (114 metres), typically taking about 49 minutes to complete. As you jog, you'll follow Wight Brook, enjoying the sight of numerous waterfalls, cascades, and natural pools that punctuate the diverse forest landscape.

When planning your visit, be mindful that while the Step Falls Trail itself is excellent for jogging, the Bear River Road portion of the loop requires caution. This road can be narrow and winding, with some sections potentially unpaved, and you will be sharing it with vehicle traffic. Consider the time of day and traffic conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable outing.

This route offers more than just a workout; it provides a chance to connect with the natural beauty of Western Maine. From the top of Step Falls, you can take in expansive views of the surrounding mountains. During warmer months, the cool, granite-lined pools along the trail also offer inviting spots for a refreshing dip, adding a unique element to your jogging adventure.
