    Hiking

This is a 1.2-mile trail that follows Mine Bank Creek all the way, descending and later ascending. As the trail begins to climb you will see various little cascades flowing down. The trail is part of Saint Mary’s Wilderness loop, and this section is a bit more overgrown than the rest, so to make the full loop it’s better to wear long pants. This area is not so frequented so you may find some solitude here.

Embark on the Saint Mary's Wilderness Loop, a moderate 10.0-mile (16.1 km) hike that takes you through Virginia's largest designated wilderness. You will navigate diverse landscapes, from lush fern forests to dense rhododendron thickets, experiencing a true immersion in nature. The route involves a significant elevation gain of 1924 feet (586 metres), which you can expect to complete in about 4 hours and 59 minutes. Along the way, you will encounter numerous creek crossings and the impressive St. Mary's Falls, offering a refreshing swimming hole. Prepare for rocky terrain and enjoy valley vistas, including long-distance views from high points like Bald Mountain.

Before you set out on this wilderness adventure, be aware that the primitive nature of the Saint Mary's Wilderness means trails can be unblazed or poorly marked. It is essential to carry a reliable map and feel comfortable with navigation, as you will need to rely on your skills. Be ready for multiple creek crossings; some sections may require you to remove your shoes due to deep water and the absence of footbridges. While parking is generally available at the trailhead, always check local conditions before your visit to ensure a smooth start to your hike.

This circuit offers a challenging experience within the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest, showcasing the natural features of a protected area. The wilderness designation means you will find a less developed environment, emphasizing self-reliance and a deeper connection with nature. You will traverse varied terrain, including sections like the Mine Bank Creek Trail, known for its significant elevation changes. This trail is an excellent choice if you are seeking a robust hiking challenge in a truly wild setting.
