    Hiking

The Greenstone Trail features rock formations, stone steps, and informational signs. This is a really short trail loop, but it's worth hiking if you are already stopped at the overlook. The rocks you see along the trail are the same rocks formed from the ancient lava flows as the rock that formed the rocky outcrops in the area. This is a cool nature trail full of history and geology.

The Greenstone Trail loop offers a unique, geology-focused nature walk right off the Blue Ridge Parkway. This easy route winds through forest and plant life, showcasing distinct rock formations and stone steps, with a notable dome of greenstone as a central feature. You'll even cross a smooth, sloping granite floor, which can be quite slick when wet, so mind your footing. The trail culminates at the Greenstone Overlook, providing views into the valley, though it's more about the geological journey than sweeping panoramas.

This short, easy hike is a fantastic option for a quick stop to stretch your legs. Covering just 0.3 miles (0.4 km) with a negligible 6 feet (2 metres) of elevation gain, it takes only about 6 minutes to complete. You'll find it conveniently located at the Greenstone Overlook, with parking readily available. It's an ideal trail for all skill levels, perfect for a spontaneous break during a scenic drive along the parkway.

What makes this trail truly special is its focus on the Catoctin Greenstone lava flow, one of the largest on Earth, which shaped the rocky outcrops you'll see. Informational signs along the way help explain this ancient geological history, though some may be weathered. It's a fascinating glimpse into the natural forces that sculpted this part of Virginia, offering a different kind of scenic beauty than the typical mountain vista.
