This section of the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail offers a classic Blue Ridge Parkway road cycling experience, winding through dense mountain forests and opening up to spectacular vistas. You'll climb steadily, passing several named overlooks like Herrin Knob View and Caney Fork Overlook, with the reward of expansive mountain scenery at every turn. The route culminates at the Richland Balsam Overlook, the highest point on the entire Parkway, providing a true sense of accomplishment.

Planning your ride means preparing for significant elevation changes; this moderate 16.0-mile (25.8 km) route includes 2114 feet (644 metres) of climbing, typically completed in about 1 hour and 40 minutes. It's best suited for cyclists with good fitness who enjoy a challenge. Parking is generally available at overlooks or designated pull-offs along the Parkway, but arriving early is advisable, especially on weekends, to ensure a spot and beat any potential crowds.

This particular segment is part of the much larger Mountains-to-Sea Trail in North Carolina, which spans the state from the Great Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks. While the broader trail is primarily for hiking, this specific route utilizes paved roads, offering a dedicated road cycling adventure through the challenging yet beautiful Western Mountains region. It's a fantastic way to experience the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway by bike.
