Embark on the Sam Knob and Flat Laurel Creek Trail Loop, a moderate hiking adventure spanning 9.4 miles (15.1 km) with a total elevation gain of 1373 feet (418 metres). You can expect to complete this route in about 4 hours and 38 minutes, immersing yourself in the diverse landscapes of Pisgah National Forest. As you hike, you will follow and cross Flat Laurel Creek multiple times, enjoying its gentle cascades and small waterfalls. The highlight of the journey is reaching the Sam Knob summit, where you are rewarded with expansive panoramic views of the Southern Appalachians.
When planning your visit, be aware that sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway leading to the trailheads may close during winter months, so check road conditions beforehand. Parking at the Black Balsam trailhead can become very crowded, especially on weekends and holidays, so an early start is highly recommended to secure a spot. The trail is dog-friendly, making it a great option if you wish to bring your canine companion along for the hike.
This loop offers a rich tapestry of natural beauty, transitioning from open meadows bursting with wildflowers to dense forests of evergreen and birch trees. The constant presence of Flat Laurel Creek adds a serene soundtrack to your hike, enhancing the feeling of being deep within nature. The varied terrain and scenic rewards make this trail a notable choice for experiencing the unique ecosystems and stunning vistas of this part of the Southern Appalachians.
