Isolated like its neighbour, Ling Fell, Sale is perched on the edge of Bassenthwaite Lake with a western slope of conifer woodland. The fell has three tops, including its main summit in the west, at 1,178 feet (359 m). For the best views of the lake, Lothwaite in the east is the top to check out.

It’s not just the Lake District that you can see from this small and gentle Wainwright. Sale Fell is interesting in that it reveals a huge variety of scenery. As you hike over its grass and bracken terrain to the summit, you’ll see mighty Skiddaw lying just across Bassenthwaite Lake. In the far distance, Helvellyn makes its presence known on the south eastern horizon.
Looking north, flat, patchwork farmland unfurls before you. On a clear day, you can even gaze right across the Solway Firth to the peaks of Galloway.
Hiking trails up Sale Fell are numerous and you can make it a short hike on a clear winter’s day or expand it into a much longer one. Lord’s Seat, to the south, is an ideal addition to your adventure, as is Ling Fell to the west.
Cockermouth lies just outside the national park boundaries while Keswick can be found to the south. Both have much in the way of sustenance and accommodation.
