The Hyalite Creek Trail offers a moderate hiking experience through a stunning glacial U-shaped canyon. As you hike, you will pass through dense coniferous forests and open meadows, with the sound of rushing water accompanying you. The route is famous for its many waterfalls; you can expect to see at least eleven cascades, including the notable Hyalite Creek Waterfalls and Grotto Falls, as you ascend. This trail covers 6.0 miles (9.7 km) with an elevation gain of 1109 feet (338 metres), typically taking around 2 hours and 53 minutes to complete.
When planning your visit, be aware that the trail includes varied terrain with rocky sections and roots. You will also encounter several stream crossings that do not have bridges, so waterproof footwear is a good idea. Snow can linger at higher elevations well into spring and summer, which can make conditions slick during colder months. Always check local regulations, as the trail is multi-use and may have specific days for different activities.
This route provides increasingly grand canyon views as you climb, with massive cliff walls and majestic peaks framing your path. It is a popular choice for those seeking a rewarding outdoor experience close to Bozeman. The trail's unique geological features, like the U-shaped canyon, highlight the powerful forces of nature that shaped this landscape, making it a distinctive hike in the Custer Gallatin National Forest.

The Grotto Falls Trail offers a delightful and unique hiking experience, winding through a rich old-growth forest before reaching its star attraction. You'll follow the Trillium Gap Trail, passing towering eastern hemlock trees and crossing small streams, with the path being mostly wide but occasionally rocky. The highlight is undoubtedly Grotto Falls, a 25-foot waterfall where you can walk directly behind the cascading water, feeling the cool mist and enjoying a truly immersive moment.
Planning your visit means heading to the trailhead via the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, but be aware that this road closes from December to mid-March, requiring a longer approach from the Rainbow Falls Trailhead during winter. Given its popularity, especially during peak season, arriving early is a smart move to ensure you find parking. This easy 2.0-mile (3.2 km) hike, with a modest 266 feet (81 metres) of elevation gain, takes about 55 minutes, making it a fantastic option for beginners or families.
What truly sets this trail apart is the opportunity to walk behind the waterfall, a feature unique among all the waterfalls in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The cool, misty cove behind Grotto Falls also provides an ideal habitat for salamanders, adding another layer of natural wonder. Beyond the falls, the Trillium Gap Trail continues, offering options to extend your hike to Brushy Mountain or Mount LeConte, and it's even used by llamas to carry supplies to LeConte Lodge.
