Just off the Great Sauk State Trail, you can take a short spur to the base of the Prairie du Sac Dam. You get a great view of the power house and the dam itself. It's a good spot to watch birds such as pelicans or eagles, or just enjoy the roar of the water.

Unlike most dams, this one rests on a foundation of over 12,000 timber piles driven deep into the sandy riverbed. This innovative approach was used due to the challenging soil conditions and remains a remarkable feat of engineering, serving the dam for over a century.
