A multi archaeological period site on a sea stack off the coast of northern Lewis. The current remains of buildings dates to the Clan Morrison period of the 16th to 18th century, but it's expected that underneath these remains lie older Nordic and earlier remains. The stack has an artificial fresh water pond so it would have been a perfectly suited strong hold able to hold its own in times of conflict.
It's connected to the mainland by a bridge which makes a great adventure.

Embark on a moderate hiking journey around the Butt of Lewis, covering 8.7 miles (14.0 km) with an elevation gain of 380 feet (116 metres). This route offers dramatic, exposed cliff-top scenery and expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean. You will pass the iconic red-brick Butt of Lewis Lighthouse, a significant landmark marking the UK's windiest spot, and enjoy sections along sandy beaches like Eoropie and Port Stoth. The estimated duration for this hike is 3 hours and 41 minutes, providing ample time to soak in the wild coastal atmosphere.

When planning your visit, remember that this trail is not recommended on very windy days due to the exposed cliff edges, which can be unstable. Consider checking local weather conditions before you set out to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on the northern tip of the Isle of Lewis.

This hike is excellent for wildlife spotting, as you can look forward to seeing diverse seabirds nesting on the cliffs. Along the sandy beaches, you might even spot seals enjoying the coastal environment. The Butt of Lewis is a unique natural area, known for its rugged beauty and as a haven for marine life, making this route a memorable way to connect with the raw power of the Atlantic.
