On this section of the path you can see these large boulders on both sides again and again. These quartzite sandstone blocks were formed 500 million years ago, exposed by erosion and displaced by glacial soil movement. One of the most well-known Vennwacken is Kaiser Karl's bedstead near Mutzenich.

Hiking

The trail passes through a landscape that still clearly bears the marks of the last ice age. The Vennwacken are large, rounded boulders of quartzite and other rocks, transported and deposited in the region by ice and meltwater. Along the trail, you can see these boulders, witnesses to the cold climate that prevailed here thousands of years ago. Today, they form a striking contrast with the soft shapes of the current peat and forest landscape of the High Fens. The trail combines geological history with natural beauty and offers a fascinating view of the landscape.
