The El Mueron Cave and Blavet Gorges Loop immerses you in a unique landscape of red volcanic rock and lush vegetation in the Var region. This challenging 4.0-mile (6.4 km) route leads you through the stunning Blavet Gorges, where the shade of trees and cliffs creates a "tropical oasis" atmosphere, complete with ivy and ferns. Highlights include the historic Mueron Cave, a vast cavity offering valley views, and rock formations sculpted by wind and water that change color with the light.
For this hike, which takes approximately 1 hour and 54 minutes and involves 556 feet (170 meters) of elevation gain, sturdy footwear is crucial due to two river crossings and a steep, rocky descent near the cave. Signage can be confusing in some spots, so a navigation app is highly recommended. Avoid the route on days of heavy rain, as the rocks can become very slippery, and while there is plenty of shade, some sections can be hot in summer.
In addition to its natural beauty, the area is a renowned climbing site, so you might spot climbers in action on the red rhyolite cliffs. Part of the trail follows the GR51, offering the pleasant sound of the Blavet River. Mueron Cave boasts a rich history, having been inhabited since the Bronze Age, which adds a cultural dimension to this challenging and picturesque adventure.
