Site also known as Sierra de Padre Caro. It marks the source of the Rio Tinto, which flows through the interior of Huelva for about 100 km until it reaches the Rio Odiel. Its name is due to the reddish color of its waters, caused by the weathering of minerals with a high content of heavy metal sulfides that were found and exploited in various deposits along the riverbed. This marvelous site and the river that originates here are the subject of scientific studies in collaboration with NASA to analyze a possible analogy with the planet Mars.

The Peña del Hierro circular route, tracing the source of the Río Tinto, plunges you into a landscape that seems to have been plucked from another planet. With its reddish waters and mineral-stained terrain, the trail guides you through a vibrant palette of colors, from blues and greens to yellows and browns. It's a visually striking experience that blends natural beauty with the imprint of a rich mining history, anchored by the iconic Peña del Hierro mine.

This easy 5.0-kilometer hike, featuring an elevation gain of 141 meters and lasting 1 hour and 27 minutes, is ideal for all ages. Access is straightforward from the Riotinto Mining Park, where the Peña del Hierro Visitor Center offers additional information. It's advisable to visit in spring or autumn to enjoy pleasant temperatures and avoid crowds, and it's always a good idea to arrive early for parking.

What truly makes this route special is its unique geology; the area is even an astrobiological research site for NASA due to its similarity to Mars. Beyond the natural beauty, you'll explore the mining history of the region, including the opportunity to venture into a 200-meter gallery and see the lake within a Roman-era crater, offering a fascinating perspective on iron extraction.
