    Hiking

The field of Segni is the most evident evidence of the karst phenomenon on the Lepini mountains. On the large grassy plateau there are three volumes, small lakes used to water the livestock that graze freely here. This place is great for a family picnic surrounded by nature.

Embark on the From Campo di Segni to Monte Lupone ring tour, a moderate hike that takes you through the diverse landscapes of the Lepini Mountains. You'll begin by crossing the wide, grassy karst plateau of Campo di Segni before ascending into a dense beech forest, where ancient trees provide ample shade. The trail then becomes steeper and more rocky as you climb towards the summit of Monte Lupone, offering expansive panoramic views that stretch from the Lazio Apennines to the Tyrrhenian Sea. This rewarding loop covers 6.0 miles (9.7 km) with 1703 feet (519 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 3 hours and 19 minutes to complete.

Before you set out, remember that this is an "E - Excursionist" trail, requiring a good level of fitness and sure-footedness due to some uneven and impervious sections. Proper footwear is highly recommended to navigate the varied terrain. Water sources are scarce in this karst environment, so it's wise to fill your bottles in the village of Segni before starting your hike. The trail offers a continuous loop, ensuring you experience new scenery throughout your journey.

This route is a highlight of the Lepini Mountains, leading you to Monte Lupone, the northernmost peak of the massif, where you'll find a cross and an old circular stone bivouac. The area is also known for its unique karst phenomena, evident in the Campo di Segni plateau, and some of the most beautiful beech forests in the Lazio Apennines. Keep an eye out for wild horses, which are sometimes seen roaming the area, adding to the natural charm of this historic region, once home to an ancient Roman colony.
