An important place to pause and consider where what crual atrocities people are able to do, if they "obey only the orders of the authorities" and be blinded by fear …

A thoughtful visit to the Mauthausen Memorial.
May 5th, the anniversary of the liberation of the Mauthausen concentration camp by the Allies, has been commemorated in Austria since 1998, following a unanimous resolution by the National Council, as a national day of remembrance against violence and racism in memory of the victims of National Socialism. On May 5th, 1945, the Mauthausen concentration camp in Upper Austria was liberated by the US Army.

A sobering and important memorial. Even if you arrive on a day or after hours when the inside area is closed you can see the memorials and sculptures, tour around the perimeter and barbed wire fences to look inside, and also visit the execution and ash mounds behind the complex.
