A grand dome and the remains of an ancient volcanic plug, West Lomond is a marvellous objective. Hikes to West Lomond take you to the principal summit of the beautiful Lomond Hills, which stretch for some six miles (ten km) above the surrounding pastureland. Upon gaining the summit, you’ll have all of Fife below you and a glorious panorama to enjoy.

From the trig point are superb views of the nearby Ochil Hills, with their south facing escarpment gazing down upon the Forth Valley. On a clear day, Edinburgh can be seen beyond the Forth Bridges, the prominent Arthur’s Seat clearly visible. Closer at hand is the green dome of sister peak, East Lomond, less than a two-hour hike away.

The highest point in Fife and an invigorating hike with geological interest

Whether you’re after a speedy direttissima or a leisurely amble to get to know the hill on an intimate level, you’re spoilt for choice. Some paths head directly up the hill, whilst others circle the summit cone. The easiest routes leave the car park at Craigmead, where you get a head start of almost 1,000 feet (300 m).

To the north west of the hill is a fascinating mushroom shaped rock formation, the Bunnet Stane. One of the Lomond Hill’s characteristic sandstone outcrops, legend tells it was the meeting place of two lovers from rival families. Like so many folk tales of similar ilk, it has a predictably tragic ending. More interesting rock scenery can be found to the south, where a jumble of rocks and boulders known as the Devil’s Burdens pepper the hillside.

The town of Glenrothes makes for the ideal base for adventures in the Lomond Hills, whilst the villages that surround the range boast charms of their own. Winter brings scenic delights and the hills can still be accessed after snowfall for those equipped with decent winter boots.

    Hiking

Really good views across all of Fife from this obvious summit. From the west a fairly high car park makes easy work of this Marilyn. A good track leads all the way to the summit, very easily done on a mountain bike too.

    Running

West Lomond at 522m is the highest point in Fife and the highest point in the Lomond Hills. It's the prominent western top on the skyline with amazing and genuinely far reaching views across Scotland.
The running here is great with good trails, ascents and descents but only very short sections of steep. The trails and tracks allow good loops from any of the car parks or Falkland.
