The hike from the Riofreddo valley to the Malinvern refuge is a moderate journey covering 4.6 miles (7.3 km) with an elevation gain of 1100 feet (335 metres), typically taking about 2 hours and 21 minutes. You'll begin on an unpaved road in Vallone di Riofreddo, which gradually changes to asphalt as you approach the Malinvern Città di Ceva Refuge. Beyond the refuge, the path transforms into a more traditional mountain trail, descending to cross the Rio Freddo via a small bridge. As you ascend through sparse larch trees and switchbacks, you'll eventually reach the broad basin containing the intensely blue Lake Malinvern, a true highlight of the route.
To start your adventure, head to the parking lot in Vallone di Riofreddo, which sits at 1518 meters above sea level. The initial section to the Malinvern Refuge is generally considered less taxing, making it suitable for a relaxed walk. However, if you plan to extend your hike beyond the lake to Colletto di Valscura, be prepared for more effort and steeper traverses. This trail is best enjoyed when conditions are clear, allowing you to fully appreciate the varied terrain and scenic views.
This trail is notable for its destination, the Malinvern Refuge, and the stunning Lake Malinvern. Situated within a national park in the Maritime Alps, the area offers a beautiful alpine environment. The route also serves as a scenic connection between the Valle Stura and Valscura areas via the Colletto di Valscura. Remember to adhere to national park regulations during your visit to preserve this special place.
