The famous stone is a boulder from the Ice Age and is mentioned in records dating back to the 17th century. A rock analysis has shown that the boulder is a variant of the Red Växjö Granite, which originates from southern Sweden. The boulder thus traveled a distance of 800 km to reach its current location. Weighing 30 to 35 tons, the Holtwick Egg is one of the largest boulders in Münsterland. The Legend of the Holtwick Egg In earlier times, the Holtwick Egg was surrounded by many legends. One of the most beautiful legends is recounted here: "When Christianity came to Münsterland and the first churches were built in our area, the devil was seized by a tremendous rage. He knew nothing better to do than to destroy the churches by throwing stones at them. But it would have to be a massive block if he wanted to achieve his goal. He carried it in his coat sleeve and stomped off. The further he went, the more the weight weighed on him. Now an old oak forest also hindered him. The gnarled giant trees pushed against him. The weight of the stone prevented him from flying over them. He cursed horribly and tried to hit the little church from a distance. With the words "Holt wiek oder ick smiet," he began to throw it. But the stone didn't fly far. With great force, it struck deep into the ground. There it lies now, and no one can remove it. Gritting his teeth, the devil departed, for he now knew that he could do nothing against Christianity. The place where the stone fell was given the name Holtwick.

From rosendahl.de: "The Heimathaus Holtwick was created from a former citizen's house, which was built in the middle of the 19th century on the site of the former Holtwick poorhouse. The exterior and the floor plan of the house remained largely unchanged during the long decades, so that even today one can gain a quite accurate idea of the life forms of the Holtwick citizens at the beginning of the 19th century. The building is the last originally preserved citizen's house of the characteristic Kirchringbebauung in the old town center. The gable front dates from the mid-19th century, timber-frame construction with a timber-frame gable on the rear, presumably from the early 17th century, the internal division with a front residential part and a rear utility part with a gate is still completely preserved."
