Eksjö itself received city rights as early as 1403 and was a garrison town from the end of the 15th century. Today, the garrison, with 600 employees, is the third largest public employer after the hospital with 1,700 and the city administration with 1,200 employees. Eksjö is known for its unique wooden house architecture. The old town still corresponds to the medieval town plan and, with its historic wooden houses, is almost entirely a protected monument. In 1997, Eksjö was awarded the Europa Nostra Diploma for the preservation of the old town. However, on August 16, 2015, the largest building in the old town was destroyed in a fire.[2] Due to its role as a garrison town and its well-preserved wooden house architecture, the city is today classified as being of Swedish national interest. Eksjö's idyllic town center is home to more than 50 listed wooden houses. This makes Eksjö one of the best-preserved wooden towns in Europe. Here, you can marvel at architecture and memories spanning over four centuries. Eksjö as a town has existed since the 15th century. However, it burned down completely in the mid-16th century and had to be rebuilt. Most of the buildings that now stand in the picturesque town center were constructed after the fire. Many of the houses you can admire today were built in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Unlike many similar historic towns, Eksjö was largely spared the major waves of modernization that swept through Sweden after World War II. In 1997, Eksjö was awarded the Europa Nostra Diploma for its excellent management of architectural and cultural heritage due to its excellent state of preservation.
