The Maredijkmolen is a hollow post mill, the oldest mill in Leiden. The mill was built in 1735 to drain the Maredijkpolder. The mill is still working and can sometimes be visited when it is turning.

This mill was built in 1787 for one of the deepest polders in the Rhineland (polder, so not a reclaimed land). This mill was in operation until 1924, in that year the drainage was taken over by a motor pumping station. This mill was probably also quite heavy, with an auger of approximately 1 meter in diameter. Decline quickly set in: although the wicker cross was renewed in 1955, deterioration followed in 1957. After that, the hull served as a summer residence for a long time. Ultimately, enormous decline set in; the roof slowly 'used up', blew away over the course of approximately 30 years and disappeared completely around 1995; In the meantime, large holes appeared in the stone hull and this mill seemed to be on the verge of collapse. It was only rescued in the 21st century after transfer to the Rijnlandse Molenstichting.
