The Willibrorduskerk got its name popularly after ivy was planted against the church walls towards the end of the 19th century.
As a result, this church was once completely overgrown with ivy.
The ivy was removed in 1954 for a major restoration, but the name has been retained in common usage. The memory of that “green” period is also recorded in the official name, along with the name of its founder, the English monk and missionary Willibrord.
