Impressive cliffs rising perpendicularly from the sea. The name "Seven Sisters" is said to have been used by sailors in the past.

From here, just off Beachy Head Road, you are either at the start or coming to the finish of the South Downs Way, depending on which direction you started from. Here you have views north across towards Eastbourne, whilst behind you are the famed cliffs of Beachy Head, and of course to the east, sublime views out over the English Channel.

This coastal landscape with its white cliffs is spectacular. Many people know that. Therefore, it is better to avoid visiting on weekends.

Above the visitor center you have a beautiful view of the chalk cliffs.

Great views of the lighthouse below. However, the cliff edge is completely unsecured and you should have a certain respect for heights. As a father of three children with unfortunately only two arms, you can start to sweat a bit. But there is an ice cream van in the car park: the only place in England where we had to pay with cash.

In Exceat, in addition to the visitor centre, there is a café, a (paid) car park and the bus stop to Brighton and Eastbourne. The buses run frequently and are very cheap, so they are a good way to explore the delta and the Seven Sisters.

Yes, the area is excellent for circular hikes. Many trails are designed as loops, so you can start and end in the same place without retracing your steps. A great example that combines coastal and woodland scenery is the Birling Gap to Beachy Head loop via Friston, which takes you through the forest and along the famous cliffs.
Friston Forest offers several easier, well-marked trails that are perfect for a family outing. The paths are generally sheltered by the beech woodland, making them suitable for various weather conditions. You can find picnic areas within the forest for a pleasant break.
East Dean is an ideal starting point for a classic pub walk. The village is home to the renowned Tiger Inn, located right on the green. You can embark on a walk through the surrounding South Downs and return to the village for refreshments. Many local routes pass directly through East Dean, making it easy to plan your hike around a pub stop.
You have a few good options for parking. There is a large free car park in the village of East Dean, which is a great starting point for many inland and coastal walks. Alternatively, you can use the pay-and-display parking at the popular National Trust site at Birling Gap, which provides direct access to the Seven Sisters coastal path.
Yes, the region is very dog-friendly. Most trails in the South Downs National Park, including Friston Forest and the coastal paths, welcome dogs. However, you will be walking through areas with grazing livestock, so it's essential to keep your dog on a lead, especially near sheep on the downlands.
The walk along the Seven Sisters involves a series of steep ascents and descents as the path follows the undulating cliffs. While the views are rewarding, the terrain is physically demanding and requires a good level of fitness. For a challenging day out, consider the Seven Sisters Cliffs – Beachy Head and Lighthouse loop from East Dean, which is one of the more strenuous routes in the area.
Yes, the area is well-served by public transport. Regular bus services run from nearby towns like Eastbourne and Brighton, with stops at key locations such as East Dean village and Birling Gap. This makes it easy to access the trailheads without a car.
Friston Forest, the largest area of new forest in South East England, offers a different experience from the coastal paths. You'll find a network of tranquil walking and cycling trails through beautiful beech woodland. The paths are well-maintained and provide splendid views over the Cuckmere River and the downs.
Several routes offer stunning views of the meandering Cuckmere River as it meets the sea at Cuckmere Haven. Hikes that start from the Seven Sisters Country Park or loop west from Birling Gap, such as the Seven Sisters, Cuckmere Haven & Friston Forest loop, provide some of the best perspectives of this iconic landscape.

Hikers frequently praise the stunning contrast between the white chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters and the serene, green woodlands of Friston Forest. The well-maintained paths and the sheer beauty of the coastal scenery are mentioned often.
