"Morningside Cottage was erected as a weekend retreat during the German colonial period in the early 1900s. The place can be reached on foot starting from the end of Boma Road. There is a splendid view from the cottage which overlooks Morogoro town and the surrounding landscape" (https://www.dpd.sua.ac.tz/morningside/#:~:text=Morningside%20Cottage%20was%20erected%20as,town%20and%20the%20surrounding%20landscape.). Somebody operates a few tents there, making it a good starting point for those who want to climb Bondwa Peak.

The Choma Waterfalls are popular destination for local tourists too. For those who do not fancy to hike the whole distance and back, there are boda (moto) drivers available all along the way who can - depending muddiness of the road - bring you all the way up to or back from the falls. There are some food stalls on the road just above the falls, and on certain days performances of Uluguru drums and dancing. You are asked to pay an entrance fee to go down to the falls

Tanzania offers a wide range of hiking experiences, with over 30 routes documented on komoot. These include 14 easy, 11 moderate, and 8 difficult trails, catering to various skill levels.
Tanzania's diverse landscapes feature many impressive natural landmarks. You can explore iconic peaks like Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), Mount Kilimanjaro, or the dramatic Ol Doinyo Lengai Crater. The region also boasts beautiful lakes such as Big Momella Lake and the unique Kikuletwa Hot Springs.
Yes, Tanzania offers several trails leading to stunning waterfalls. The Udzungwa Mountains National Park is famous for the Sanje Waterfall Trail. You can also find routes like the Uluguru Waterfall – Choma Waterfall loop from Peace Mountain Lodge or the Waterfall – Engaresero Falls loop from Lake Natron Tented Camp.
The best time for hiking in Tanzania generally depends on the region and specific activity. For mountain ascents like Kilimanjaro and Meru, the dry seasons (January-March and June-October) are usually preferred for clearer skies and safer conditions. For rainforests like Udzungwa, the dry season also offers more comfortable trekking, though the wet season brings lush greenery and fuller waterfalls. Always check specific weather forecasts for your chosen destination.
While many trails in Tanzania are challenging, there are easier options suitable for families. For instance, the Hiking loop from Jozani is an easy 3.2 km route. The Udzungwa Mountains also offer shorter, scenic walks. Always consider the difficulty and duration of a trail when planning a family outing.
Hiking in Tanzania ranges from easy walks to extremely challenging multi-day ascents. You'll find 14 easy routes, 11 moderate, and 8 difficult trails. Iconic climbs like Mount Kilimanjaro and Ol Doinyo Lengai are considered difficult, while many trails in areas like the Usambara Mountains offer moderate options.
Absolutely. Tanzania is renowned for its multi-day treks, most notably the 5-9 day ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro and the 3-4 day climb of Mount Meru. The Ngorongoro Highlands also offer longer treks, such as from Empakaai Crater to Lake Natron, often involving camping and requiring a licensed guide.
The trails in Tanzania are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.5 stars from over 70 reviews. Hikers often praise the diverse landscapes, from volcanic peaks to lush rainforests, and the unique cultural and wildlife encounters.
Yes, permits are generally required for hiking in Tanzania, especially within National Parks and Conservation Areas like Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru (Arusha National Park), Udzungwa Mountains, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. For safety and conservation, many areas also require hikers to be accompanied by a licensed guide and sometimes an armed ranger.
While some larger towns near popular hiking regions might have public transport options (like buses or dala-dalas), reaching specific trailheads, especially in remote national parks, often requires private transport, organized tours, or taxis. It's advisable to arrange transport in advance, particularly for multi-day treks.
Yes, many trails in Tanzania are designed as circular routes, allowing you to start and end at the same point. Examples include the Magamba Viewpoint loop from Lushoto in the Usambara Mountains, or the challenging Ol Doinyo Lengai Crater loop from Trailhead for Ol Doinyo Lengai.
Tanzania is rich in wildlife. On hikes in areas like Mount Meru (within Arusha National Park) or the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, you might encounter various mammals and birds. The Udzungwa Mountains are known for rare monkeys, while Mahale Mountains National Park offers unique chimpanzee trekking experiences. Always maintain a safe distance and follow guide instructions.
For unique volcanic landscapes, consider hiking in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which features dramatic craters like Empakaai and Olmoti. The active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai also offers a challenging trek through a distinct volcanic environment, as seen in the Ol Doinyo Lengai Crater loop.
