Glacier tongues in all directions and the rushing stream in the valley – you just have to take it all in. It's a good idea to combine the tour with the Tuftebreen glacier, but the detour up the mountain is worth it, albeit considerably more challenging than the Bergsetbreen glacier. It's only 3.5 km from the parking lot, which is free and toll-free. Camping is not permitted there!

It's worth a visit and easy to reach from the nearby parking lot.

One more thing: Tolls are NOK 70 for cars and NOK 140 for RVs. At the parking lot below, there are some gravel areas suitable for overnight stays. Next to them is an outhouse. Above the parking lot is a DNT hut with toilets, showers, and water. After a hike to the glacier, an overnight stay with a view of the glacier is highly recommended!

You follow a winding summer road up from Fortun, and then—there it is: Nørdstedalseter, a friendly staffed cabin right at the top of Fortunsdalen. It’s a cozy hub between Breheimen and Jotunheimen, with around 40 beds and a real mountain hut atmosphere. In summer, you can drive right up; in winter, it’s ski tracks all the way . Inside, there’s a wood stove, electricity, showers, and meals served—breakfast, dinner, even local lamb or deer dishes if you're here in season. The trails around are stunning—think glaciers, lush valleys, and high peaks. It's the kind of place where you drop in, warm up with a hot meal, refill your water, and make plans for the next day's adventure.

This trail runs alongside the Illvatnet lake, crossing a scree slope. This makes it challenging, especially in windy and rainy weather.

The Bergsetbreen Glacier is a breathtaking offshoot of the Jostedalsbreen, nestled in a serene valley surrounded by towering cliffs and lush green slopes. A scenic hike through the peaceful Krundalen valley leads you to a stunning viewpoint.

A great starting point to start a tour. You can also park your car here for several days. There is even the option to take a shower, but it costs 75 krone.

The trails in Luster are highly regarded by the komoot community, boasting an average rating of 4.5 stars from over 1,100 reviews. Hikers frequently praise the majestic fjord views, the unique glacier landscapes, and the diverse terrain that ranges from gentle paths to demanding mountain ascents.
The prime hiking season in Luster typically runs from late spring through early autumn (May to September). During these months, trails are generally clear of snow, and the weather is more favorable for exploring the fjords, glaciers, and mountains. Some higher-altitude trails may remain snow-covered until mid-summer.
Yes, Luster has several family-friendly options. An excellent choice is the Flat hike to Bergsetbreen glacier, an easy 4.6-mile path that offers a relatively flat approach to an impressive glacier, suitable for a less strenuous outing with children.
For breathtaking fjord vistas, consider the hike to Mount Molden. Locals claim it offers the best view in Luster, with panoramic sights of the Lustrafjord. Another strong contender for grandiose fjord views is Børesteinen. You can also find incredible views from the Molden Summit.
Absolutely. For experienced hikers seeking a challenge, the Fannaråken Trail from Turtagrø is a demanding 10.3-mile route with significant elevation gain, leading to Norway's highest DNT cabin. Another difficult option is the Massiv Trail: Sota Sæter to Nørdstedalseter.
Luster is renowned for its glaciers and waterfalls. You can hike to the impressive glacier front on the From Tungestølen to Austerdalsbreen glacier route. For waterfalls, the region boasts several, including the majestic Feigefossen Waterfall and Avdalsfossen Waterfall.
Beyond the stunning fjords and glaciers, hikers can discover various natural and cultural landmarks. The Molden Summit offers incredible views, and you might pass by the abandoned Svarthiller Mountain Farm. The UNESCO-protected Urnes Stave Church can also be viewed from certain trails across the Lustrafjord, adding a cultural dimension to your hike.
Many trails in Luster are dog-friendly, but it's essential to keep dogs on a leash, especially during lambing season (spring/early summer) and in areas with grazing livestock or wildlife. Always check local regulations for specific trails or national parks like Jostedalsbreen, where rules might be stricter.
While many routes are point-to-point, Luster does offer circular options, particularly for shorter or moderate hikes. These often involve exploring specific valleys or mountain areas. It's best to check individual tour details on komoot for routes explicitly marked as circular to plan your return.
Public transport options to reach trailheads in Luster can be limited, especially for more remote starting points. Buses operate between some villages, but for ultimate flexibility, a car is often recommended. Some popular trailheads might have seasonal shuttle services, so it's advisable to check local tourist information for the most current schedules.
For many popular hiking trails in Luster, designated parking areas are available at or near the trailheads. These can range from small informal spots to larger paid parking lots, especially for well-known routes like Mount Molden or access points to Jostedalsbreen National Park. Arriving early is recommended during peak season.
Winter hiking in Luster is possible but requires careful planning and appropriate gear due to snow and ice. Many higher-altitude trails become inaccessible or require specialized equipment like snowshoes or skis. Lower-lying trails might be navigable, but conditions can change rapidly. Always check weather forecasts and trail conditions before heading out in winter.
