A bridge over the Lovaart, along the Yser. Fintele is a small hamlet at the intersection of the IJzer and the Lokanaal that has developed into an attractive hub for cycling and walking recreation and gastronomy. The central open meeting space was enriched with a bicycle shed and benches. Jettys for boats and a rest area for hikers were constructed along the shore. Since the end of the 17th century, a swing bridge has allowed farmers to cross the IJzer near Fintele to get the hay from the IJzerbroeken and to take the cattle to the broeken. In the mid-19th century, the swing bridge made way for a demountable bridge that was built up and taken down every summer. This 'Hooipiete' (piete is West Flemish for removable wooden bridge) also had to be broken up and replaced by hand with every passage of a ship. The increase in pleasure boating and increasingly heavy agricultural vehicles meant that the bridge was not rebuilt after the summer of 1990. De Hooipiete is now set up over a ditch in the meadow next to restaurant De Hooipiete.

Fintele lock is a lock and spillway located in Fintele, a hamlet in Pollinkhove, Lo-Reninge. It is located at the confluence of the Lovaart and the Yser. During the First World War, Fintele was close to the front, but was not badly damaged. In World War II, just before the capitulation of May 1940, the lock was blown up by the Belgians for tactical reasons. It was completely rebuilt in 1943.

This lock with drawbridge is located in Fintele, a hamlet of Pollinkhove (Lo-Reninge). Count Ferdinand De Baillet, governor of West Flanders and chamberlain of Willem I, laid the first stone of the new lock in 1827. This bluestone stone was recovered after the Second World War and bricked into the brick wall of the current drawbridge. In order to be able to discharge peak flows of the Yser via the Lo Canal without burdening the lock, a weir with bulkhead beams was built in 1869 next to the lock. During the Second World War, retreating English troops destroyed the entire lock complex. It was restored after the war and protected as a monument in 1995, partly because of the unique sloping brick walls in the lock chamber.

Cyclists like to settle down on the terrace of café De Vate on the market square of Lo. Their 'calorie bomb' is the Lo's dish: a gigantic plate of cheese, ham, pie, potted meat, bread and vegetables, preferably washed down with a Trappist beer!

January 25, 2023, Vatevijver Pond

The Vatevijver is a pond in the Belgian town of Lo. The pond is located southwest of the town hall and the market. A vat was constructed to collect rainwater, usually in the immediate vicinity of the church. This was crucial in the construction of a polder village, an environment where there is a lot of brackish, unusable water. The vate was at the same time a drinking water well, watering place, water supply for washing and fire-fighting water supply. The Vatevijver was first mentioned in 1404. In the past, women would go to the Vate pond to bleach their laundry. It was forbidden to wash wool or pour soapy water or other dirt into it. It was the inspectors who were responsible for the cleanliness of the vate water.

The lock is located at the mouth of the Lokanaals in the Ijzer. You can follow the cycle path along the canal to Veurne.
