With speed over the Yser! This wooden foot and cycle bridge connects the banks of the Yser in the historic hamlet of Elzendamme. It is the ideal crossing for cyclists who want to avoid the busy regional road and calmly continue their way along the towpath. Nearby, you'll also find the historic, stone 'Dutch Bridge' over the Dode IJzer. A lovely, wide polder spot to slow down for a moment and look out over the water!

Folk nostalgia on the Yser 🍻 Anyone cycling through Stavele can hardly ignore the authentic facade of ’t Hof van Commerce. This 180-year-old inn breathes the atmosphere of the Westhoek, with old signs, horse stables, and an interior full of antiques and stories. The former stables have been given a new life as atmospheric themed rooms, the terrace is located on the spot of the former pigsty, and even the toilet is in an old rabbit hutch. 😄 On the terrace, near the historic Stavele bridge and the Yser, you can enjoy a Picon, regional beer, or a hearty Breughel buffet. A wonderful place to put your bike aside for a moment and experience the authentic Westhoek at its best!

Bridge closure: The bridge at Fintele is closed to all traffic until October 2, 2026 due to works. New lock gates are being installed, among other things. I came from the Diksmuide direction, had to turn back and continued cycling along Reninge. I haven't seen the situation on the other side yet (whether you can continue to Veurne, for example)

This path runs parallel to the wide street, so you avoid the crowds. Moreover, there are beautiful views. This is actually a bridle path, but also lovely for walking!! 🥾

Not all forest paths are correctly marked on the Komoot map, but the paths themselves are beautiful and nice to walk on 🥾.

The oldest part, the Gothic chancel, dates from the 13th century. The church is mentioned as early as 1119; it was subsequently rebuilt several times. Between 1435 and 1496, the aisles and the south transept were further extended. The late-Gothic hall church was formerly part of the Augustinian Abbey of St. Peter. The monks used the section of the church between the transept and the chancel, which featured wooden choir stalls dating from 1624. The north aisle served as the abbot's chapel. The abbey was founded in 1093 and was abandoned in 1797 as a result of the French Revolution. Looting in 1478 and a fire in 1580 necessitated reconstruction, which was carried out in the same style. In 1847, the abbey room separating the parish church from the abbot's chapel was demolished. A neo-Gothic tower replaced the old Romanesque crossing tower (1866-1869). During the First World War, the tower was blown up, and of the church itself, only the rising walls remained. Many of the building's art treasures had been rescued in time and were preserved. After the war, the church was rebuilt according to the original plans. The destroyed 19th-century tower was replaced by a slightly lower one. https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sint-Pieterskerk_(Lo)
