The Old Town Hall in Schifferstadt is among the most beautiful and interesting half-timbered town halls in the Palatinate and, with its semi-open, stone ground floor hall and the discreetly decorated half-timbering on the upper floors, is an excellent example of a representative town hall from the 16th century. At the time of its construction, between the late Middle Ages and the early modern period, the life of the population in Schifferstadt was particularly influenced by the destruction of the Limburg Monastery, which possessed privileges in the municipal constitution and large landholdings in Schifferstadt, the Peasants' War, the plundering by Margrave Albrecht, and the Reformation. Originally, the Old Town Hall was a court building with an "open" courtroom on the ground floor, meaning there was an open door arch on each side, while the remaining arches were closed up to window height. On the upper floor were the deliberation rooms, where officials such as the Faut, Schultheiß, Schöffen, Büttel, and others conducted their business. A rarity at the town hall is the pillory and the "Betzekammer" (punishment cell) on the north side below the staircase. Both point to the former function as a place of jurisdiction. The village court could decide on minor field damage, quarrels, brawls, and similar matters and punish the guilty in the Betzekammer. This is closed by a small, late Gothic-shaped door with a hatch, through which relatives could pass food to the prisoners. If no one remembered, the prisoner had to starve. The Old Town Hall was declared a protected cultural asset by the United Nations by decree of August 19, 1988, and is listed on the monument list of the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage.

Nice spot, but it's a shame when the whole hill is parked with cars. Then the hill isn't so ugly.
