The village of Gerwigshain was located approximately 3 km northwest of Mengsberg, on the road to Hatzbach (locally known as Butterweg), near the site of a deserted church, in the headwaters of a stream flowing towards Mengsberg. The field name appears in various forms: 1555 "Wüstung Gerwichshain" (deserted village of Gerwigshain), 1576 "Gerbisheim", around 1614 "Wüste Gerwigshain" (deserted village of Gerwigshain), 1708/10 "Wüste Kirche" (deserted church).
